How to Study Economics
A practical approach to studying economics: how to read graphs and models, think on the margin, and turn abstract theory into answers you can actually write.

Economics rewards a specific kind of practice: not reading more, but redrawing the same handful of models until you can apply them to a situation you’ve never seen. Learn the models, not the definitions
It’s tempting to memorize a glossary of terms like “elasticity” or “comparative advantage” the way you’d memorize vocabulary. Instead, for every model you learn, practice three things: what the graph looks like, what shifts each curve, and what happens to price and quantity (or output and employment, in macro) when a curve shifts. Practice on the margin, not just the average
A huge share of economic reasoning is marginal: not “should I study economics” but “should I study one more hour of economics,” not “is this factory profitable” but “should this factory produce one more unit.” When a practice question feels confusing, check whether you’re answering the average-case version of the question instead of the marginal one. Rewriting the question in marginal terms (“what’s the extra benefit versus the extra cost of this next unit”) solves a surprising number of stuck problems.
Use real examples to anchor abstract ideas
Opportunity cost, comparative advantage, and elasticity all stay abstract until you attach them to something concrete you actually understand, a decision you made, a product you buy, a job trade-off. When you learn a new concept, immediately generate your own example rather than reusing the textbook’s. Explaining a model in your own words with your own example is the Feynman technique in practice, and it catches the difference between “I followed that explanation” and “I could re-explain that to someone else.”
Build a review rhythm before exams
Because the same handful of models resurface all semester (a demand shift in week 3 is the same demand shift in a labor-market question in week 10), spacing your review pays off more in economics than in subjects with less-repeated structure. Is economics a hard subject to study?
It's not conceptually hard so much as it's a different kind of hard: the ideas themselves are simple (people respond to incentives, resources are scarce) but exam questions test whether you can apply them to situations you haven't seen before. Students who just memorize definitions struggle; students who practice applying the same three or four models to new scenarios do fine.
Do I need to be good at math to study economics?
For an introductory course, no. You need to read a graph, find a slope, and solve a two-variable equation. Math becomes central once you move into intermediate micro, econometrics, or a quantitative degree track, but at that point you're building on comfort with graphs you should already have from the intro course.
What's the difference between studying micro and macroeconomics?
