How to Study for the MCAT
A high-yield MCAT prep plan across all four sections, how to build passage strategy for CARS, and the pacing that gets you through a 7.5-hour exam.

The MCAT covers four sections: Biological and Biochemical Foundations, Chemical and Physical Foundations, Psychological/Social/Biological Foundations of Behavior, and Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills (CARS). Three of those sections test content you can review; CARS tests a reading skill you can only build through repetition. A realistic plan treats these as two different projects running in parallel rather than one long content review.
Map your content gaps before you start reviewing
Take one full-length diagnostic before opening a single content book. Score it by section and by broad topic (biochemistry, physiology, psychology terminology, and so on) so you know where your actual gaps are instead of assuming you need to review everything equally. Most people who took biology and chemistry recently need far less biology review than they expect and far more practice applying that knowledge to unfamiliar passages.
Review content in high-yield order, not textbook order
Pathways and concepts that show up across many practice passages (enzyme kinetics, amino acid properties, key psychology and sociology terms, common physics setups like circuits and fluids) deserve first priority. A content review book’s table of contents is not a priority list. Building spaced flashcards as you review, rather than after, means the material you covered in week one is still there in week eight; a flashcard generator built from your own notes keeps that review queue current without extra manual work, and the underlying logic is the same one covered in spaced repetition explained.
Start CARS on day one, not week eight
CARS improves slowly, so daily practice from the start of your prep matters more than intensity later. Read one or two passages a day, untimed at first, and focus on identifying the author’s main argument and tone rather than memorizing details you’ll be asked to look up. Once your accuracy is stable untimed, add the clock.
Build stamina deliberately
The real exam is roughly 7.5 hours including breaks. Full-length practice tests, taken under real timing and on the same schedule you’ll use on test day, are the only way to build the stamina to stay sharp through the fourth section. Treat every full-length as non-negotiable, and review it as thoroughly as you studied for it: every wrong answer becomes a note on exactly which content gap or passage-reading habit caused it.
Protect the review-to-practice ratio
It’s tempting to keep taking new practice material instead of reviewing what you already got wrong, because review feels slower. Resist that. An unreviewed miss repeats itself on the next test; a reviewed miss, turned into a targeted flashcard or a rewritten explanation in your own words, tends to stick. This is the same recall-first principle in active recall: retrieving and correcting an error teaches more than re-reading the content that produced it.
Run full-lengths roughly weekly in your final month, and taper content review as test day approaches so your last days are spent on review and rest, not new material.

How long does MCAT prep usually take?
Most premeds plan for two to four months of dedicated full-time study, or four to six months studying part-time alongside coursework. The content review itself (biology, chemistry, physics, psychology, sociology) can move fast if you've taken the prerequisite courses recently; what takes longer is building passage-based stamina and CARS reading speed.
Do I need to memorize every biochemistry pathway?
No. High-yield pathways (glycolysis, the electron transport chain, key hormone signaling) come up repeatedly, but the test rewards applying a pathway to a novel passage more than reciting every enzyme. Spend your memorization budget on the pathways that show up across practice tests, not on completeness.
Why is CARS so much harder to improve than the science sections?
CARS has no content to review, so gains come purely from reading practice and pattern recognition across passage types. It responds slowly and needs daily reps over months, which is why most study plans start CARS practice on day one instead of saving it for later.
Is it normal to burn out during MCAT prep?
Very common, because the exam is long and content-heavy and most people study for it while still taking a full course load. Building in fixed rest days and treating full-length practice tests as the priority, not extra content review, protects the stamina you'll need for a 7.5-hour test day.
